In 1797 William Black donated thirty-eight acres of land which was divided into a grid now referred to as the Sixteen Squares. A year later the Town of Blacksburg was founded with little more than two dozen families.
In 1850, its population was about 270 persons and 63 slaves. Today, Blacksburg is the largest town (, but not the largest city) in Virginia with a population of ca. 39700 citizens. Due to the located university, 88 percent of its population is not older than 44 years and 37 percent of its people are between 21 and 24 years old. Virginia Tech, the Town's major employer and university, is the heart of the city. The campus can get quite busy when the semester begins. Approximately 40 percent of the land in Blacksburg is undeveloped. So, you definitely need a car to see the beautiful surrounding landscape (the Blue Ridge Mountains). Roanoke - the next major city, which has the nearest airport - is also connected through Greyhound Bus Lines.
