Blacksburg Halle Trip Thanksgiving 2002 Debate of MIS
OR Seminar
Some useful things
|
It was Friday night and we were ready for take off: leaving Blacksburg to explore the East Coast of the United States. The only problem we had: a car (really necessary in the States).
Christian and Jan (the two guys who came with me from Halle) decided to buy a Ford Taurus for 1500 USD on Wednesday, two days before that Friday. We departed a bit delayed (somewhat around 7), because they also decided to change the radiator.
Anyway, we did not hit the road before stopping at the local Walmart to get some supplies. As everybody should know, driving from Blacksburg to Boston takes quite some time with that speed limit (I always complain about that), especially when you get into a snow storm (blizzard?).
It was only a small blizzard, but as prepared as German people are, we had no winter shoos for the car. I think it was around midnight, when we could hardly see the lane on the interstate sledding around 30 mph. We learned that, somehow snow impacts only cars and never the huge trucks on the road. Truck drivers never slow down for nothing. This obviously does not help to clear the sight of the people in the little cars, because they get the mud on the windshield.
Fortunately, we met a snowplow. Unfortunately, it left us a couple of miles later to clear the other side of the interstate.
I remember, it was around 3.00 am when the storm slowed down and we could speed up a bit. Despite the little problems to get gas at night (never, never leave without your credit card, and yes, you can use it at a gas station), everyone was prepared to meet Boston.
