The Martin-Luther-University

http://www.uni-halle.de/

The Martin-Luther-University (MLU) emerged of two universities, the University of Wittenberg (founded in 1502) and the University of Halle (founded in 1694).

Wittenberg became famous for Martin Luther and Melanchton, who were leaders of the Reformation in the Middle Age.

Halle became a starting point of the German Elucidation by Christian Thomasius (jurist) and Christian Wolff (philosopher).

Both universities were joined in 1817.

The city and the Martin-Luther-University, both expanded since that time. The main campus is located in downtown, but some departments of the MLU  are scattered over the whole city, in contrast to a campus-university like Virginia Tech, Blacksburg.

Today, the Martin-Luther-University is divided in seven faculties and 18 departments. More than 14.000 students can choose more than 100 majors.

The five main branches of research are today:

*      Studies of Humanities and Socials Science

*      Studies of Natural Sciences

*      Studies of Engineering

*      Studies of Medicines

*      Studies of Business

      The business faculty of the MLU is only a few steps away from the main campus. Erich Gutenberg, one of the forerunners of the study of Business Studies, completed his doctoral studies in Halle in 1921 and eventually began his scientific career in Halle.
